Canonization Mass may draw 1,000 bishops

(CNA/EWTN News).- Holy See Press Office director Father Federico Lombardi said that as many as 150 cardinals and 1,000 bishops will concelebrate the April 27 canonization Mass for Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII.

The concelebrants at the altar will include Vicar General of Rome Cardinal Agostino Vallini, former John Paul II aide Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow, and Bishop Francesco Beschi of Bergamo, Vatican Radio reports.

Fr. Lombardi told an April 24 press conference that Mass attendees will include more than 93 official delegations from countries and international organizations, plus 24 heads of state. Representatives of other major religions, including Orthodox Christian, Anglican, Jewish and Muslim officials, will attend.

Youth fill cathedral in Rome to remember John Paul II & John XXIII; 500 Catholics in Papua New Guinea make 2 week pilgrimage in steps of first missionaries

(CNA/EWTN News).- The Basilica of St. John Lateran, cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, was filled Tuesday with thousands of youth who had come to learn more about the two former popes who will be canonized Sunday.

In other pilgrimage news, Catholics in Papua New Guinea honored the evangelization, 80 years ago, of the remote interior of the nation's main island by making a pilgrimage in the steps of its first missionaries.

“After 80 years, the Catholic faithful in the Archdiocese of Mount Hagen felt it is time to say thank you and to acknowledge all the blessings from God through the missionaries,” said Paul Petrus, a social researcher and a layman of Papua New Guinea, in an April 21 interview with CNA.

Some 500 Catholics, including three priests and nine seminarians, trekked through the mountainous highlands of New Guinea from March 28 until April 13, Palm Sunday.

Big news on two fronts!

Big news on two fronts: 

 

1) Blesseds John XXIII and John Paul II have been officially cleared for canonization!  The date is still to be determined but it looks at if it might make for a fitting end to the Year of Faith this upcoming November.  (That's where I'm putting my money anyway.)  Along with other traditions that seem to be falling to the wayside with our new pope is the tradition for a second miracle.  Blessed John XXIII has been cleared without such, something that has not happened for a very, very long time.   Click here to read more on this.

2) Pope Francis, not one who has a hard time saying all sorts of things as said much on this Friday.  Not only did he announce the canonization of the two recent popes but he also released his first encyclical.  Click here for a link to Lumen Fidei.
